The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a low-pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal, bringing isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across many parts of West Bengal from October 2 to 4.

The West Bengal government has rolled out emergency measures following forecasts of heavy rainfall beginning October 1, a senior official said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also directed officials to take necessary precautions, he added.

“Considering the developing situation, we have activated extensive emergency protocols. All relevant departments have been placed on high alert. The Chief Minister is personally overseeing the arrangements,” the official told PTI on Sunday.

Recently, 12 people lost their lives in Kolkata and nearby areas due to torrential rain and electrocution incidents.

To strengthen oversight, the administration has set up a dedicated control room where a senior IAS officer will remain stationed, the official said.

“Monitoring will be conducted round the clock. The control room will operate continuously throughout the festive period — from September 26 to October 7, October 20–24, and October 27–28,” he noted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, bringing isolated heavy to very heavy rain across most parts of West Bengal from October 2 to 4.

The IMD has also warned of squally winds at 35–45 kmph, with gusts up to 55 kmph during this time.

“The sea is expected to be rough. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the north and central Bay of Bengal along and off the West Bengal–Odisha coasts on these two days,” the bulletin added.
